About three years ago, my brother Josh went on a trip with Mrs. Hott to Italy. When he came back, he had so many wonderful stories and pictures to share with me. The experiences he encountered while there gave me a whole new outlook on the world outside of the United States. I’ve never really had an opportunity to venture out into foreign places before. I’ve been to other states (the Eastern Coast), but that’s hardly a difference in culture, language, or scenery.

In my spare time I like to do a lot of things with soccer. Any extra time that I have, when I’m not doing homework or listening to music, I spend playing soccer. I took dance lessons for 10 years from Studio1. I had a lot of fun doing it, but it got to the point where it wasn’t challenging anymore. Also in my extra time, I enjoy listening to rock music and some pop. The only pop artists I like are Avril Lavigne and those from the 80s, whereas I could go on and on about rock. I used to play the piano and trumpet, but now I’m trying to learn the guitar, though I haven’t had much success yet.

Some of my favorite foods include Italian and Mexican. I would really enjoy trying authentic Italian food.  One of the only foods that I don’t like is seafood. I’m kind of like the “black sheep” in the family because everyone else loves it. But other than that, I’m open to trying new and interesting foods. I know that this has nothing to do with food, but one other thing I really can’t stand, is cigarette smoke. So, if I am chosen, I would appreciate not being in that kind of environment.

I mostly live with my mom. My parents were divorced when I was around 10 or 11. Even though they aren’t together anymore, I still have both of them to count on. At home I, like any other kid, have chores. The most common chore for me is cleaning my room. My mom also has me wash the dishes, vacuum, clean the bathrooms…etc. Most of the people in my family are Christians; we go to the First United Methodist Church in Romney, though my grandma goes to the Church of Christ.

I really enjoy hanging out with my friends, too. They are, to me, the coolest people I know. Without my friends I would 1)have a lot less laughter in my life 2)have a lot less funny/embarrassing moments to remember and 3)be extremely bored! And I really do love all the time I spend with them.

I remember back in the 2nd grade, each class in the elementary school had to do some kind of report/presentation on a country. My class had Spain, but I still remember going into Ms. Mayhew’s 3rd grade class and learning about Italy. Back then I didn’t think too much about going to a different country, but now that I’m given the opportunity to do so, I don’t think I could pass it up.

My career goals include a lot of art and literature. I either want to do something with drama (whether it’s teaching or acting) or journalism. What better place is there to go and encounter such incredible art than Italy? By going to Italy, I will get to experience a lot of these artistic and cultural views. Going to Italy would give me a much greater view of the world around me. West Virginia is beautiful, but if that’s all that you ever really see, then you are missing out.

It’s hard to explain, just by writing, how much I want to go to Italy. You can’t see the facial expressions, the desire, or all the deep thought that escapes my mind as I’m sitting here typing this paper. I want to get out of my usual routine and try something completely different for a change. Plus, I think that by going, I will gain more of an understanding about my future career plans. All I can do is hope that you, by reading this paper, can understand how and why going to Italy will benefit my life and my future ambitions. Besides, who knows when I’m going to have another chance like this to go to a foreign country? This could be it; this could be the one and only shot for me to go.
